It's time for the St. John's IceCaps to decide who they are going to be this year: a team that's in the conversation for a Calder Cup title, or a team that will be swept aside by AHL clubs boasting NHL-caliber talent.

Continue reading "Gut-Check Time for the Slipping IceCaps"

Season 2 started on the right foot at home for the St. John's IceCaps this past weekend. After being shut out by the Hamilton Bulldogs last year in their home debut, winning the first meeting of this two game series against the Adirondack Phantoms set the tone for a strong home campaign this season. In the second game on Saturday night the home side was unable to force overtime and lost 4-3.

Continue reading "Opening Weekend at Mile One Centre: First Look at the Phantoms"

The last time the IceCaps were playing in front of their fans on home ice, they were being swept from the Eastern Conference Final by the Norfolk Admirals. Watching the minutes of the third period tick away, with the visitors up 4-0, one would assume the crowd would start drifting out as soon as the 50-50 winner was announced. Instead, something amazing happened. At the four minute mark, the entire crowd came to their feet and gave the home team an ovation that lasted long after the final whistle. This was a crowd thanking an organization that in only one season, had brought championship-level hockey to a city dying for a someone to cheer for.

Continue reading "IceCaps Season One: A look back before going forward"

Of all the lower seeded teams the St John's IceCaps could have drawn, heading into the AHL Eastern Conference Playoffs, getting the Syracuse Crunch is looking like the toughest possible assignment. With all respect to teams like Hershey, Connecticut and Manchester, Syracuse brings a powerhouse offense, a steady, active d-corps, and enviable depth at goal.

Here is a rundown of opposing players to watch in the IceCaps' first-ever playoff series.

Continue reading "Syracuse Crunch Playoff Scouting Report"
